A new revolution
A new revolution in eCommerce: Progressive Web Apps (PWAs). Where a few are already preparing to turn their website into a PWA, most businesses have only just heard about it. Nevertheless, businesses like Google, Magento, Apple, and Windows have already been investing in this technology. They are working hard to get their organization ready for Progressive Web Apps.
Progressive Web Apps are web-based applications that use the latest web capabilities to deliver a native app-like experience to users. It is the technology that will bring consistency between web and native apps and replace both with a single instance. They are also called: ‘the next big thing after responsive web design’.
To be classified as a PWA, a website has to meet, among others, the following criteria:
Progressive: should work for anyone regardless of their browser choice
Responsive: should work on any device: desktop, mobile, tablet, etc.
Secure: always served via HTTPS
Indexable: should be identifiable as an application and allows search engines to find and index it.
Linkable: should have an actual URL structure
Jamie Maria Schouren, Co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer at Deity, wrote an article for Twinkle Digital Commerce. In this article, she explains what Progressive Web Apps are, the benefits they bring along, and what assets a PWA should have. Lastly, she explains the added value of PWAs for eCommerce businesses. Read it here. Be aware, the article is in Dutch.
